Methodology
Transparent calculation
BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.
Countertop area = run length × depth + island area. Order area = surface area × fabrication allowance. Slabs = round up (order area ÷ usable slab coverage).

Use this calculator to estimate countertop surface area, slab or sheet demand and preliminary cost from runs, widths, islands and waste. Fabrication, seam placement, edge profiles and support remain product-specific.
Calculation steps
- 1Measure each countertop run at finished depth.
- 2Add islands, splashes and waterfall panels separately.
- 3Subtract only cutouts when the supplier credits them.
- 4Apply fabrication allowance and compare with slab or sheet dimensions.
Worked numerical example
Two 10 ft cabinet runs at 25.5 in depth plus a 7 ft × 3 ft island total about 63.5 ft². With 15% fabrication allowance, planned material area is roughly 73 ft².
Purchasing and rounding
Stone is often purchased by slab while laminate or solid surface may be sold by sheet or fabricated area. Seam layout and usable slab geometry matter more than area alone.
Interpret the result
The estimate is a budgeting and takeoff figure. Purchased slab area can substantially exceed installed area because remnants may not fit other sections.

Should sink cutouts be subtracted from slab area?+
Usually no. The removed material still comes from the purchased slab, and fabrication adds a separate cutout charge.
Why is usable slab coverage smaller than slab dimensions?+
Edge defects, seams, pattern direction and fabrication margins reduce usable material.
Does this include edge profiles?+
No. Edge treatment is commonly priced separately by linear length.
