Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Panel spaces along each direction = round up (slab dimension ÷ target spacing). Interior cut lines are one fewer than spaces. Total cut length sums each line across the opposite slab dimension.

How to use this estimate in a real project

Estimate total saw-cut length, blade passes and approximate cutting time for a planned joint grid. Joint spacing, timing and depth must follow the slab design, concrete mixture and environmental conditions.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Lay out the approved panel dimensions in each direction.
  2. 2Count only interior cut lines required by that layout.
  3. 3Add cuts around columns, re-entrant corners or separate placements.
  4. 4Use realistic cutting speed and blade life for time and consumable planning.

Worked numerical example

A 60 ft × 40 ft slab divided into 10 ft panels needs five interior cuts across the 40 ft direction and three across the 60 ft direction, totaling 380 linear ft before perimeter or isolated-joint cuts.

Purchasing and rounding

Blade type, diameter and quantity depend on saw power, aggregate hardness, cut depth and whether cutting is early-entry, wet or dry. Confirm dust and slurry controls before mobilization.

Interpret the result

Cut length is a production quantity, not proof that the joint layout controls cracking. Timing and depth are as important as spacing.
