Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Sealant volume = joint length × joint width × sealant depth. The volume is converted to milliliters, increased by the entered allowance and rounded up to full cartridges.

How to use this estimate in a real project

Estimate sealant volume and cartridge count for concrete control joints from total joint length, joint width, sealant depth and package yield. Joint design, backing material and sealant type must come from the project specification.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Measure each joint run and separate different joint sizes.
  2. 2Enter the installed sealant width and depth, not the saw-cut depth.
  3. 3Calculate total volume and divide by verified package yield.
  4. 4Round upward and include small allowance for nozzle, tooling and irregular joints.

Worked numerical example

A floor has 640 ft of joints averaging 3/8 in wide and 1/4 in deep. The geometric sealant volume is about 90 in³. If one cartridge provides 18 in³ after loss, five cartridges are the mathematical minimum; a sixth provides working allowance.

Purchasing and rounding

Confirm whether cartridges, sausages or pails are being used and convert the package volume consistently. Purchase compatible backer rod and primer separately where required.

Interpret the result

The quantity result does not establish the correct width-to-depth ratio, movement capability or adhesion. Excess depth may waste sealant and reduce joint performance.
