Worked numerical example

For 24 rafter bays that need an unobstructed soffit-to-attic air path, plan 24 baffles; if each baffle is 48 in long and the protected path is 8 ft, two sections per bay may be required.

Purchasing and rounding

Buy baffles to match the actual rafter or truss-bay width and the required ventilation path length. Count every bay that must stay open from soffit to attic; where one baffle does not reach the required height, calculate stacked pieces per bay and round to whole baffles rather than treating them as area coverage.

Interpret the result

The result is the number of ventilation channels needed to keep insulation from blocking soffit airflow. It does not establish total attic ventilation capacity; intake and exhaust NFVA, roof geometry and local requirements must be checked separately.

Does every rafter bay need a baffle?+

Count bays that receive intake air according to the attic ventilation design. Unvented assemblies use different moisture and insulation details.

Why might one bay need more than one piece?+

The required chute run can extend farther upslope than one stock baffle, especially with deep insulation near the eave.

Does this size the attic ventilation system?+

No. It estimates chute pieces after the vented bays and run length have been established.
