Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Required NFA = attic floor area ÷ ventilation ratio, converted to square inches or square centimetres. Intake and exhaust quantities round up from their assigned shares.

Worked numerical example

A 1,500 ft² attic at a 1:300 ratio requires 5 ft², or 720 in², of total net free area before splitting intake and exhaust.

Purchasing and rounding

Select intake and exhaust products by their published net free ventilating area (NFVA), not by grille dimensions. Divide the required NFVA between low and high vents as the chosen ventilation strategy requires, then round each side up to whole vents or whole lengths of continuous vent.

Interpret the result

The result is ventilation opening area, not fan airflow. A balanced system can be limited by whichever side has less NFVA, and insulation blocking soffit paths can make installed vent area ineffective even when the arithmetic meets the selected ratio.
