Methodology
Transparent calculation
BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.
Net membrane area = wall length × protected height − excluded openings. Order area = net area × detail/lap factor. Rolls = round up (order area ÷ nominal roll area).

How to use this estimate in a real project
Last reviewed: August 19, 2026
Estimate sheet waterproofing membrane rolls for vertical protected surfaces after subtracting true field openings and adding a project-specific allowance for laps, corners and detailing. It separates nominal roll area from actual installed planning area.
Calculation steps
- 1Measure only wall length that receives the membrane system.
- 2Use the actual protected height from the termination to the lower waterproofed edge.
- 3Deduct only areas that truly receive no field membrane.
- 4Apply the lap/detail allowance and round the resulting area to full membrane rolls.
Worked numerical example
A 92 ft foundation perimeter at 8 ft protected height has 736 ft² gross wall area. Subtracting 24 ft² of excluded openings leaves 712 ft². With 15% for laps and detailing, plan about 818.8 ft² before dividing by the selected roll area.
Purchasing and rounding
The membrane roll is only one part of many systems. Primer, liquid detailing, corner reinforcement, termination bars, tapes, protection board and drainage components may need separate takeoffs.
Interpret the result
Purchased roll coverage will exceed the net wall area because sheet laps, corners and detailing consume usable membrane. The calculator is an ordering estimate, not a waterproofing-system design.
Page-specific assumptions
- Predominantly vertical wall surfaces.
- One membrane product and roll size.
- Opening deductions are limited to true uncovered field areas.
- The entered allowance reflects the selected system detail.
Common mistakes
- Using nominal roll area as guaranteed installed coverage.
- Deducting penetrations even though they require extra flashing membrane.
- Assuming drainage board is a substitute for waterproofing.
- Ignoring termination and corner accessories.

FAQ
Waterproofing Membrane Calculator questions
Should I deduct windows and penetrations?+
Deduct only true field-membrane areas that will not be covered, then keep a realistic detailing allowance because openings often require extra membrane or accessory pieces.
Does drainage board replace waterproofing membrane?+
No. Drainage/protection board and waterproofing perform different functions unless a specific proprietary system states otherwise.
Why can the installed coverage be less than roll area?+
Side laps, end laps, corners, trimming and damaged material reduce usable field coverage.
