Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Lost volume = flow rate × minutes leaking. Water cost uses thousands of gallons in imperial mode or cubic metres in metric mode. The optional sewer surcharge is added as a percentage of the water charge.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Measure or obtain each design input from the actual project and keep one consistent unit system.
  2. 2Enter leak rate, duration and water-sewer tariff using product data or approved design information rather than generic nominal values.
  3. 3Review the unrounded engineering or usage result before applying allowances, duty cycle, efficiency or tariff assumptions.
  4. 4Apply each adjustment once, then round only the final purchasing, equipment-count or scheduling output.

Worked numerical example

A continuous 0.25 gpm leak wastes 360 gallons per day; at a combined water/sewer rate of $0.012 per gallon, that is about $4.32 per day.

Purchasing and rounding

Use the measured leak rate and the marginal water plus sewer tariff that applies to the wasted volume. Repair decisions should also consider damage risk, not only utility cost.

Interpret the result

The calculation turns a constant leak rate into wasted volume and billing cost. Intermittent leaks require a duty factor, and tiered tariffs can change the effective unit price.
