Methodology
Transparent calculation
BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.
Base plate length = net wall length × total plate layers. Add the lap and cut allowance, divide by stock length, round to boards, then round to full bundles.

FAQ
Wall Plate Lumber Calculator questions
Should door openings be deducted from wall plates?+
Often the bottom plate is installed continuously during layout and cut out later, while top plates remain continuous. Leave deductions at zero unless the takeoff method clearly excludes material.
Why are top and bottom layers separate?+
Assemblies may use one bottom plate and one or more top plates. Separate entries allow the total linear requirement to reflect the project detail.
Does this choose lumber species or treatment?+
No. Plate size, grade, species, treatment and fastening must follow the wall design and exposure conditions.
