Gross wall area = room perimeter × height × room count. Net area subtracts doors and windows. Order area applies the selected allowance.

Calculate gross and net wall surface for rectangular rooms, subtracting doors/windows once and optionally adding an ordering allowance and area-based cost.
Calculation steps
- 1Calculate room perimeter from length and width.
- 2Multiply perimeter by wall height and room count for gross wall area.
- 3Subtract door and window areas per room once.
- 4Apply the project allowance only if the material or finish requires ordering above net area.
Worked numerical example
A 15 ft × 12 ft room with 8 ft walls has a 54 ft perimeter and 432 ft² gross wall area. Subtracting 21 ft² of doors and 30 ft² of windows gives 381 ft² net. A 10% allowance produces 419.1 ft² for ordering.
Purchasing and rounding
Use net wall area for coverage products such as paint, drywall or paneling only after adapting for that product’s coverage, coats, sheet layout or waste. The allowance field is intentionally generic because this calculator measures geometry.
Interpret the result
Gross area is the full wall envelope; net area removes openings; order area adds the chosen planning allowance. Keep those three values separate when passing measurements to another calculator.
