What each value means

The labels and units below are part of this calculator’s visible methodology. Replace every default with measurements or product data from the actual project.

Total eave length

Enter this project assumption in ft. The current imperial default is 180 ft.

Total rake-edge length

Enter this project assumption in ft. The current imperial default is 92 ft. Minimum: 0.

Rake edges receiving starter

Enter this project assumption in %. The current imperial default is 100 %. Minimum: 0. Maximum: 100.

Extra valleys, transitions or repairs

Enter this project assumption in ft. The current imperial default is 12 ft. Minimum: 0.

Cuts and lap allowance

Enter this project assumption in %. The current imperial default is 10 %. Minimum: 0. Maximum: 50.

Effective coverage per package

Enter this project assumption in linear ft. The current imperial default is 105 linear ft.

Price per package

Enter this project assumption in a unitless value. The current imperial default is 64. Minimum: 0.

How to read the outputs

entered total eave length. Default preview: 180 ft.

Rake coverage

100% of entered rake length. Default preview: 92 ft.

Detail length

transitions, repairs or other entered runs. Default preview: 12 ft.

Purchased coverage

105 per package. Default preview: 315 linear ft.

Unused package coverage

full-package rounding. Default preview: 2.6 ft.

Starter-strip cost

starter packages only. Default preview: $192.00.

Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Base starter length = eaves + selected percentage of rake edges + entered detail length. Waste is added, then the result is divided by effective package coverage and rounded up.

FAQ

Roofing Starter Strip Calculator questions

Should starter strip be installed on rake edges?+

Requirements vary by shingle system and installation detail. The percentage field lets the estimate match the selected method.

Why use effective package coverage?+

Published coverage should already reflect the product layout. Nominal material length may not equal installed linear coverage.

Is drip edge included?+

No. Drip edge is a separate metal component and can be estimated with the roof drip-edge calculator.
