Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Total run = eave length + rake length. Effective piece length = stock length − overlap. Base pieces = total run ÷ effective length, rounded up. Waste is added before the final whole-piece order.

Use this calculator to estimate drip-edge length and piece count. It supports measurement, purchasing and preliminary budgeting, but it does not select assemblies, products, code details or installation methods for the project.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Measure each project section separately and keep every input in one unit system.
  2. 2Enter the verified values for eave and rake runs, laps and stock length.
  3. 3Review the raw measured result before applying waste, overlap, labor or price assumptions.
  4. 4Apply one documented allowance, then divide by the exact package yield or stock length and round up only at the purchasing stage.

Worked numerical example

A roof requiring 184 linear feet of eave and rake edge needs nineteen 10 ft drip-edge pieces before lap and cut allowance.

Purchasing and rounding

Measure eaves and rakes that actually receive drip edge, then divide each run by the usable length of the stock pieces after required laps. Round to whole pieces and keep corners or special profiles separate when they cannot be formed from standard lengths.

Interpret the result

The result is linear drip-edge requirement and stock count for the entered runs. Purchase quantity exceeds raw perimeter when laps and short offcuts reduce usable length, especially on roofs with many rake segments.

Why subtract overlap from each piece?+

Adjacent pieces share a lap, so each additional stock piece contributes slightly less than its full length to the finished run.

Are eave and rake profiles always the same?+

Not always. Some projects use different profiles or details. Split the estimate when stock length or price differs.

Does this include flashing around walls and chimneys?+

No. It estimates roof-edge metal only, not step flashing, counterflashing or valley metal.
