Methodology
Transparent calculation
BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.
Base flashing length = wall junctions + chimney perimeter + skylight perimeter + penetrations × allowance per penetration. Overlap and waste are added, then packages are rounded up.

Use this calculator to estimate linear flashing and full stock pieces for roof-to-wall, chimney, valley or penetration details entered as measured runs. It does not design flashing geometry or determine compatible metals and membranes.
Calculation steps
- 1Measure each flashing run along the actual detail.
- 2Separate different flashing types and widths.
- 3Add required end laps and cutting allowance.
- 4Divide by stock length and round up.
Worked numerical example
Four roof-wall runs totaling 86 ft with 10% lap and cutting allowance require 94.6 ft. With 10 ft stock pieces, purchase 10 pieces.
Purchasing and rounding
Step flashing, counterflashing, apron flashing and continuous flashing should be ordered separately. Stock width, hem, bend and material compatibility matter as much as linear length.
Interpret the result
The calculated linear quantity does not verify that the detail sheds water correctly. Transitions and end conditions often require custom pieces.
