Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Base capacity uses area × entered load rate. Ceiling height, insulation, climate and reserve factors adjust capacity. Electrical input = thermal capacity ÷ COP.

How to use this estimate in a real project

Use this calculator to create an early mini-split capacity scenario from conditioned area and editable load intensity. Final indoor-unit and outdoor-unit selection requires room loads, climate data and manufacturer performance at design temperatures.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Define the actual zone served by one indoor unit.
  2. 2Estimate heating and cooling loads rather than relying only on area.
  3. 3Check minimum and maximum modulation.
  4. 4Verify outdoor-unit combination and capacity tables at design conditions.

Worked numerical example

A 650 ft² zone at 25 BTU/h·ft² gives 16,250 BTU/h. That screening result may point toward an 18,000 BTU/h class, but windows, infiltration and low-temperature capacity can change the correct selection.

Purchasing and rounding

Nominal model size is not guaranteed delivered capacity. Line-set limits, branch boxes, electrical supply and condensate routing are separate design and installation items.

Interpret the result

Oversizing can cause short cycling and poor humidity control; undersizing may reduce comfort at design conditions. Modulation range matters alongside nominal capacity.

Common mistakes

  • Sizing by floor area alone.

Does rated capacity stay constant in extreme weather?+

No. Heating and cooling output changes with outdoor and indoor conditions.
