Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Piece volume = length × actual width × actual thickness. Piece weight = volume × density. Quantity is rounded up after the extra allowance, then total weight, board feet and cost are calculated.

Lumber Weight Calculator questions

Why use actual rather than nominal board dimensions?+

Nominal names such as 2×6 are usually larger than the finished dimensions used to calculate volume.

How does moisture affect lumber weight?+

Wet or pressure-treated lumber can weigh materially more than dry lumber of the same size.

Is board foot a weight unit?+

No. A board foot is a volume unit; weight still depends on density.
