Use the Landscape Rock Calculator to convert bed area and installed rock depth into bulk volume, estimated weight, bag count and cost. It is designed for decorative rock or similar aggregate where supplier bulk density and bag weight are known.
Calculation steps
- 1Convert the selected depth to the same length unit used for area.
- 2Multiply area by depth to obtain geometric volume.
- 3Apply the handling/settlement allowance once.
- 4Use the supplier density for bulk weight, then compare bulk pricing with full-bag rounding.
Worked numerical example
Covering 500 ft² at 3 in deep requires 125 ft³, or about 4.63 yd³ before allowance. With 10% extra, plan about 5.09 yd³. At an entered bulk density of 1.4 tons/yd³, that is about 7.13 tons. If using 50 lb bags instead, the same modeled weight would require roughly 286 bags, which makes the bulk-versus-bag comparison obvious.
Purchasing and rounding
Ask the supplier for product-specific bulk density and delivery unit because river rock, crushed stone and lightweight decorative aggregates can differ substantially. For bagged material, use the actual bag weight rather than a generic coverage claim.
Interpret the result
Volume controls how much space the rock fills; weight controls hauling and bulk-ton purchasing. Bag count is a packaging conversion and can be impractical for large areas even when the arithmetic is correct.
