Methodology
Transparent calculation

Effective strip width = roll width − overlap. Strips = round up (bed width ÷ effective width). Rolls = round up (strip length × strips × waste factor ÷ roll length).

Calculation steps
- 1Measure each bed length and width.
- 2Calculate effective roll width after side overlap.
- 3Round the strip count upward.
- 4Add end overlap and waste, then round to full rolls.
Worked numerical example
A 60 ft × 25 ft bed covered with 4 ft-wide fabric and 6 in side overlaps requires 8 strips. With end allowance and 10% waste, two 300 ft rolls may be needed depending on strip layout.
Purchasing and rounding
Use actual roll dimensions and overlap recommendations. Pins or staples are separate and depend on soil, slope and wind exposure.
Interpret the result
Area-only division can undercount because strip count must be rounded across the bed width before total length is calculated.
