Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Staples = perimeter ÷ edge spacing + interior grid intersections + seam length ÷ seam spacing. Extra allowance is added, then packages are rounded up.

Estimate landscape-fabric staple quantity from fabric area/perimeter and the selected field, seam and edge spacing.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Measure fabric perimeter, seam lengths and any interior anchoring pattern.
  2. 2Apply the chosen staple spacing separately to edges, seams and field rows.
  3. 3Add the counts from each fastening zone.
  4. 4Round to whole packages after confirming the staple count per box.

Worked numerical example

A 20 ft × 30 ft fabric area has a 100 ft perimeter. At 2 ft edge spacing, the perimeter alone needs about 50 staples; seams and interior anchoring are added separately based on their own spacing.

Purchasing and rounding

Select staple length and material for the soil and fabric system, then buy by actual package count. Wind-exposed slopes, loose soil and tight curves can require closer fastening than a flat protected bed.

Interpret the result

The result is a fastening count for the spacing pattern entered. It does not determine fabric coverage; edge, seam and field staples serve different restraint functions and should not be collapsed into one arbitrary staples-per-square-foot factor.
