Water demand is a flow profile, not a package quantity

Residential water-demand planning asks how much water can be used at the same time and how much is used over a day. Peak flow matters for piping and pumps; daily volume matters for storage, wells and conservation. Those are different questions and should not be collapsed into a single generic allowance.

Worked demand example

Consider a morning period when one 2.0 gpm shower, a 1.5 gpm lavatory faucet and a 2.2 gpm kitchen faucet may run at the same time. The simple simultaneous flow is 5.7 gpm before any diversity or system-specific adjustment. If the household also uses 280 gallons over a full day, that daily volume should not be divided by 24 hours and used as the peak-flow requirement; the average would hide the short high-demand periods that control pressure and pump behavior.
