Residential drainage planning follows water from source to outlet. Estimate runoff, identify grading paths, size inlets and conveyance, then quantify trenches, bedding, stone, fabric and storage. A trench without a safe outlet is not a drainage solution.
Worked example
A 2,400 ft² roof under a 2.5 in/hr design storm with a 0.95 coefficient produces about 59 gpm. If half the roof drains to one side, that branch begins near 30 gpm before accounting for additional paved areas. Pipe, inlet and overflow checks should use the branch flow, not the whole-site total indiscriminately.
