Transparent calculation

Volume = path length × width × compacted depth. The allowance is applied before multiplying by density. Bag count divides total weight by bag weight.

Calculation steps
- 1Measure path length and average width, splitting irregular paths into sections.
- 2Convert the finished compacted depth to the same unit system.
- 3Calculate volume as area × depth.
- 4Convert volume to supplier units using the selected gravel density and account separately for compaction or settlement.
Worked numerical example
A path 60 ft long and 4 ft wide at 3 in compacted depth contains 60 ft³, or about 2.22 yd³. At 1.4 tons/yd³, the theoretical mass is about 3.1 tons before compaction/ordering allowance.
Purchasing and rounding
Order by the supplier's actual unit—tons, tonnes, cubic yards or cubic metres—and use density for the selected aggregate, not a universal gravel value. Confirm whether quoted volume is loose-delivered or compacted.
Interpret the result
The geometric result is finished path volume. Delivered loose gravel can require more volume than the compacted layer, and density varies by aggregate type and moisture condition.
