Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Bays = round up(length ÷ maximum spacing). Installed rail length = fence length × rails per bay.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Measure the fence runs that use the same bay spacing.
  2. 2Determine the number of bays between posts.
  3. 3Enter the required rails per bay for the fence design.
  4. 4Multiply bays by rails per bay and convert to the actual rail stock length if rails span more than one bay.

Worked numerical example

A 96 ft fence divided into twelve 8 ft bays with three rails per bay requires 36 rail pieces if each rail spans one bay; stock-length substitutions should be checked before ordering.

Purchasing and rounding

Match rail length and section to the post spacing and fence system. If stock rails are longer than one bay, create a cut plan before rounding pieces; do not assume every bay consumes one full stock length.

Interpret the result

The result is horizontal rail quantity for the selected bay pattern. Gates, stepped terrain and reinforced end sections may use different rail counts and should be calculated separately.
