Transparent calculation
BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.
Panelled length = total length − gate openings. Panels and concrete bags are rounded up. Total material cost adds panels, posts, concrete, gates and hardware allowance.

Calculation steps
- 1Measure each fence run and identify gates or breaks.
- 2Calculate the required panels/pickets, posts and rails from the selected layout.
- 3Apply current unit prices to each material line.
- 4Add gates, concrete, hardware and delivery as separate items rather than hiding them in one allowance.
Worked numerical example
For 120 ft of fence using 8 ft panels, 15 panels cover the run. If panels cost $68 and 16 line/end posts average $24 each, those two items total $1,404 before gates, concrete, fasteners and delivery.
Purchasing and rounding
Price the actual fence system being installed, including compatible posts, rails, brackets and gate hardware. Keep unlike components on separate cost lines so supplier substitutions can be evaluated without distorting quantities.
Interpret the result
The result is a material-cost estimate, not installed-project cost. Labor, demolition, grading, permits, concrete and delivery may be substantial and should be added only when they are part of the scope.
