Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Base screws = drywall area ÷ rate area × entered screw rate × layers. The allowance is applied and packages are rounded up.

Use this calculator to estimate drywall screw quantity from board area, framing spacing, fastener spacing, layer count and allowance. It supports purchasing and does not replace an approved fastening schedule.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Determine installed drywall area and layer count.
  2. 2Apply the screw-rate or spacing model appropriate to the assembly.
  3. 3Add handling and dropped-fastener allowance.
  4. 4Round upward to the sold box count.

Worked numerical example

For 1,600 ft² of single-layer drywall, an entered rate of 1 screw per ft² gives 1,600 screws. With 10% allowance, plan 1,760 screws and round to full boxes.

Purchasing and rounding

Screws are bought in full boxes by count or weight. Match length, thread and corrosion resistance to framing material, board layers and exposure.

Interpret the result

Higher counts can reflect closer spacing, multiple layers, ceilings or perimeter requirements. Area-only estimates should be checked against the actual fastening schedule.
