Transparent calculation

Net area = wall area + selected ceiling area − openings. Sheets are based on waste-adjusted area. Total cost = sheets + finishing-material allowance + labor on net area.

Build a drywall budget from net wall/ceiling area, full-sheet count, finishing-material allowance and labor rate instead of applying one generic cost factor.
Calculation steps
- 1Calculate wall perimeter × height and add only the ceiling percentage being boarded.
- 2Subtract door/window area once to obtain net board area.
- 3Apply sheet waste and round the result to full sheets.
- 4Price sheets separately from finishing materials and labor, which are based on their stated area basis.
Worked numerical example
A 16 ft × 12 ft room with 8 ft walls has 448 ft² of gross wall area. Adding the full 192 ft² ceiling and subtracting 45 ft² of openings gives 595 ft². With 10% waste and 32 ft² sheets, 21 sheets are required.
Purchasing and rounding
Confirm sheet dimensions and thickness, moisture/fire requirements, delivery constraints, joint compound type, tape and screw needs. Large sheets can reduce joints but may not fit access routes.
Interpret the result
Sheet cost is driven by rounded full sheets, while finishing and labor scale with net surface area. A supplier total can differ because corner bead, specialty board and delivery are outside the entered rates.
