Methodology
Transparent calculation
BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.
Runoff = catchment area × rainfall depth × runoff coefficient. Target storage applies the capture percentage. Aggregate pit volume divides storage by void ratio; footprint divides by usable depth.

How to use this estimate in a real project

Estimate runoff storage volume and convert it either to an aggregate-filled pit using void ratio or to a count of modular storage units.
Calculation steps
- 1Measure only the catchment actually routed to the dry well.
- 2Convert rainfall depth to runoff volume using the runoff coefficient.
- 3Apply the capture target to determine required storage.
- 4For stone systems divide water storage by verified void ratio; for chambers divide by rated unit storage.
Worked numerical example
For 1,200 ft² of connected roof, a 1 in storm and 0.90 runoff coefficient produce about 90 ft³ of runoff. Capturing 50% requires about 45 ft³ of storage. At a 0.40 aggregate void ratio, the excavation must provide roughly 112.5 ft³ of aggregate zone.
Purchasing and rounding
For aggregate systems, order washed stone by excavation volume rather than water-storage volume. For modular systems, use the manufacturer’s net storage capacity and required envelope dimensions.
Interpret the result
Storage volume is water space, not excavation volume. A stone-filled dry well must be larger because only the aggregate voids store water.
