Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Door casing = 2 × height + width. Window casing = 2 × (height + width). Total length applies the cut allowance before stock pieces are rounded up.

Use this calculator to estimate combined casing length and stock pieces. It supports measurement, purchasing and preliminary budgeting, but it does not select assemblies, products, code details or installation methods for the project.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Measure each project section separately and keep every input in one unit system.
  2. 2Enter the verified values for opening perimeters, reveal conditions and stock length.
  3. 3Review the raw measured result before applying waste, overlap, labor or price assumptions.
  4. 4Apply one documented allowance, then divide by the exact package yield or stock length and round up only at the purchasing stage.

Worked numerical example

A 3 ft × 7 ft door trimmed on three sides needs about 17 linear feet for one face before miters and waste; casing both faces doubles that run.

Purchasing and rounding

Build a casing cut list by opening and by face. A door commonly uses head plus two jamb pieces, while a window may use four sides; double the run only when both faces are actually trimmed. Choose stock lengths that can produce the longest pieces without joints and allow for miter or reveal cuts.

Interpret the result

The result is casing length for the openings and sides selected. It is not the rough-opening perimeter: stool, apron, extension jambs, plinth blocks or nonstandard trim details are separate components and can materially change the takeoff.

Why are doors calculated on three sides?+

Typical interior door casing covers both jamb legs and the head, without casing across the floor.

Does this include both faces of each opening?+

No. The defaults calculate one trimmed face. Double the opening counts when both sides receive the same casing.

Are window stools and aprons included?+

No. Add their measured lengths separately or increase the allowance.
