Use the Deck Ledger Flashing Calculator to estimate flashing or membrane length for one or more deck ledgers, including end returns, planned splice laps, detailing allowance and full-roll rounding. It addresses water-management material quantity, not structural ledger attachment.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Add the ledger length, both end returns and planned lap/splice length for each ledger.
  2. 2Multiply by the number of equal ledgers.
  3. 3Apply the detailing allowance for corners, penetrations and field cuts.
  4. 4Round the final length to whole rolls or stock sections.

Worked numerical example

Two 28 ft ledgers with 6 in returns at both ends and 2 ft of planned splice/lap length per ledger require 62 ft of base flashing: (28 + 1 + 2) × 2. Adding 12% detailing allowance gives 69.44 ft. With 50 ft rolls, the order is 2 rolls, leaving 30.56 ft available for additional compatible details or offcuts.

Purchasing and rounding

Verify flashing width, material compatibility, roll length and the complete wall-to-ledger drainage detail. Rigid cap flashing and self-adhered membrane may be separate products; do not assume one roll replaces every layer in the assembly.

Interpret the result

Base length describes the planned flashing path. Order length adds detailing allowance, while purchased length reflects full-roll rounding. A large leftover is often caused by roll size rather than excessive waste.
