Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Deck area = length × width. Decking area adds waste. Total cost adds decking, framing, labor, railings, footings and fixed project allowances.

How to use this estimate in a real project

Last reviewed: July 29, 2026

This calculator combines deck area, framing, surface boards, railing, footings, hardware, labor and contingency into a preliminary project budget. It does not size structural members or replace plans and permits.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Define deck footprint and height.
  2. 2Estimate framing and decking quantities with the relevant calculators.
  3. 3Enter railing length, footing count and hardware separately.
  4. 4Add labor, delivery, permits and contingency once.

Worked numerical example

A 16 ft × 20 ft deck has 320 ft² of surface area. Entering separate rates for decking, framing, railing and labor reveals which scope drives the total rather than hiding everything in one square-foot price.

Purchasing and rounding

Boards, joists, posts, connectors and fasteners are rounded in their own takeoffs. Cost rates should reflect the selected species, treatment, finish and corrosion environment.

Interpret the result

Cost per square foot is useful for comparison only when railing, stairs, demolition and foundation scope are equivalent.

Page-specific assumptions

  • Simple deck geometry.
  • Structural design exists separately.
  • Rates include the stated scope only.
  • Site access and demolition are entered where applicable.

Common mistakes

  • Pricing only deck-board area.
  • Ignoring railing and stairs.
  • Using untreated interior hardware.
  • Adding contingency to already marked-up rates twice.

FAQ

Deck Building Cost Calculator questions

Why are railings priced separately?+

Railing systems often have a much higher cost per linear unit than the deck surface and vary widely by material.

Does the framing rate include beams and joists?+

It is an editable combined allowance. Detailed framing quantities should be checked with the deck calculators and project design.

Are stairs included?+

Only through the entered fixed allowance. Large or complex stair systems should be priced separately.
