Estimate concrete volume for a lintel from length, width, depth and quantity. This is a material takeoff only; lintel span, reinforcement, bearing and temporary support require approved structural design.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Use the designed lintel dimensions including required bearing length.
  2. 2Calculate one lintel volume and multiply by quantity.
  3. 3Add separate volumes for end blocks or integrated bond beams if present.
  4. 4Apply placement allowance and round to supplier or batch increments.

Worked numerical example

Four lintels each 6 ft long, 8 in wide and 12 in deep contain 16 ft³, or 0.59 yd³. With 10% placement allowance, plan about 0.65 yd³.

Purchasing and rounding

Small lintels may be mixed by bag or batch, while multiple lintels may justify ready-mix. Coordinate reinforcement, forms and placement access before selecting the supply method.

Interpret the result

The quantity result does not indicate whether the lintel is adequate for the opening or supported loads. More concrete can increase self-weight without solving reinforcement or bearing deficiencies.
