Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Contact area = 2 × (length + width) × form height × quantity. The allowance is applied before form sheets are rounded up. Bracing stock uses total perimeter divided by stock length.

How to use this estimate in a real project

This calculator estimates form-contact area, sheet count and framing stock for simple concrete walls, beams or edges. It supports a takeoff but does not design form pressure, bracing, ties, shores or safe stripping time.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Identify every concrete face that requires a form.
  2. 2Calculate contact area for each face.
  3. 3Add corners, bulkheads and edge forms separately.
  4. 4Apply reuse assumptions and allowance before rounding sheets and lumber upward.

Worked numerical example

A 40 ft wall that is 8 ft high and formed on both faces has 640 ft² of contact area. With 10% cutting allowance and 32 ft² per plywood sheet, the sheet requirement is 22 full sheets.

Purchasing and rounding

Sheet count depends on whether panels can be reused between placements. Lumber, ties and release agent must be ordered for the actual form system rather than inferred from sheet area alone.

Interpret the result

Contact area measures the concrete surface touching forms, not concrete volume. Two-sided walls normally have roughly twice the face area of one wall elevation.

No. Studs, ties and braces must be designed for fresh-concrete pressure and site conditions.
