Methodology
Transparent calculation
BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.
Net wall area = length × height − openings. Layout blocks = net area ÷ nominal block face area. Waste is applied before pallets and mortar bags are rounded up.

This calculator estimates concrete masonry units from wall area, block module, openings and waste. It supports material takeoff but does not determine wall thickness, reinforcement, grout, bond beams or structural capacity.
Calculation steps
- 1Measure gross wall area.
- 2Subtract true masonry openings.
- 3Use the nominal block module including mortar joints.
- 4Add cutting and breakage allowance, then round to full units or pallets.
Worked numerical example
A 40 ft × 8 ft wall has 320 ft². Subtracting a 21 ft² opening leaves 299 ft². Standard 8 in × 16 in nominal CMU uses about 1.125 blocks per ft², producing about 337 blocks before waste.
Purchasing and rounding
Blocks are purchased as whole units and often by pallet. Corner, bond-beam, lintel and specialty units must be counted separately from standard stretchers.
Interpret the result
The result is a field-unit estimate. Mortar, grout, reinforcement and specialty shapes require their own takeoff.
