Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Fill volume = block count × selected fill percentage × fill volume per block × allowance. Bags = round up (fill volume ÷ bag yield).

How to use this estimate in a real project

This calculator estimates grout or concrete needed to fill selected CMU cores from wall size, block geometry and fill percentage. It helps order grout but does not determine which cells must be reinforced or filled.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Determine the actual number of blocks or wall modules.
  2. 2Identify the percentage or count of cells to be filled from the plans.
  3. 3Use the actual open-core volume for the block product.
  4. 4Apply waste and round to the supplier unit.

Worked numerical example

A wall with 240 standard blocks, two cores per block and 50% of cores filled may require about 240 core fills. If each open core averages 0.045 ft³, net grout is about 10.8 ft³ before waste.

Purchasing and rounding

Use grout yield or ready-mix volume for the specified grout, not nominal block volume. Cleanouts, lifts and pumping can increase handling loss.

Interpret the result

The calculator converts a defined fill pattern into material quantity. It does not establish reinforcement spacing or structural grout requirements.

It reduces volume slightly, but project tolerances and waste often exceed that difference.
