Estimate concrete volume for a driveway, garage or loading apron from width, projection, thickness and quantity. The transition geometry, reinforcement and subbase must follow the project design.
Calculation steps
- 1Measure the apron footprint at the finished edges.
- 2Use the approved slab thickness and separate thickened edges.
- 3Add curb transitions or isolated pads as separate shapes.
- 4Apply placement allowance and round to supplier increments.
Worked numerical example
A 20 ft wide apron projecting 8 ft at 6 in thick contains 80 ft³, or 2.96 yd³. With 8% allowance, plan about 3.20 yd³.
Purchasing and rounding
Coordinate excavation, compacted base, dowels, forms and traffic access. Short-load and pump minimums may dominate cost on a small apron.
