Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Main slab volume = length × width × thickness. Thickened-edge volume uses the perimeter band area × extra depth. Allowance is added before bag rounding.

How to use this estimate in a real project

This calculator estimates concrete volume, ready-mix quantity and cost for a driveway from plan dimensions, thickness and allowance. It does not select slab thickness, reinforcement, subbase or joint layout.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Measure the full paved footprint.
  2. 2Enter the actual design thickness.
  3. 3Calculate volume and add a placement allowance.
  4. 4Compare the result with supplier truck and minimum-order policies.

Worked numerical example

A 40 ft × 12 ft driveway at 5 in thick contains 200 ft³, or 7.41 yd³. Adding 8% allowance produces an order of about 8.0 yd³ before supplier rounding and delivery minimums.

Purchasing and rounding

Ready-mix is ordered by volume and suppliers may round to fixed increments. Bagged mix is generally practical only for small repairs or isolated sections.

Interpret the result

The volume result answers how much concrete is needed, not whether the driveway section is suitable for soil, vehicle loading, freeze-thaw exposure or drainage.

Does the edge calculation double-count the corners?+

No. It subtracts the inner rectangle from the overall rectangle to obtain one continuous perimeter band.

How thick should a driveway be?+

Thickness depends on soil, base, reinforcement, vehicle loads and local practice. Use an approved project specification.

Are control joints optional?+

Joint layout is an important crack-control detail. The displayed quantity is only a spacing guide, not a complete joint design.
