Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Each side is divided into segments no longer than the entered maximum spacing. For a closed rectangular perimeter, total perimeter bolts equal twice the sum of length-side and width-side segments, plus entered extras.

How to use this estimate in a real project

Estimate anchor-bolt quantity from wall or sill-plate length, maximum spacing, end offsets and added bolts at openings or concentrated connections. Use the result for takeoff only; bolt diameter, embedment, edge distance and spacing must follow the approved structural detail.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Measure each continuous anchored wall segment separately.
  2. 2Apply the permitted maximum spacing and include required end positions.
  3. 3Add bolts required beside openings, hold-downs or special connections.
  4. 4Round to full package quantities after confirming diameter, length and finish.

Worked numerical example

For 96 ft of sill plate with bolts at 6 ft maximum spacing, the spacing count is 17 positions when both ends are included. Adding four bolts for two wide openings gives 21 bolts before spare allowance.

Purchasing and rounding

Buy the exact bolt diameter, embedment length, thread projection and corrosion protection shown in the plans. Keep nuts and washers matched to the bolt specification, and add only a modest spare quantity for damaged threads or layout changes.

Interpret the result

The result is a position count, not proof that the connection resists uplift, shear or overturning. A larger count can result from short wall segments and end requirements even when total wall length is unchanged.

Does this determine bolt embedment?+

No. Embedment, diameter, edge distance and hardware depend on loads, concrete strength and the approved connection design.

Should openings receive extra bolts?+

Many wall openings, splices or hold-down locations need additional anchors. Enter those separately from regular perimeter spacing.
