Methodology
Transparent calculation
BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.
Sloped roof area = (length with overhangs × width with overhangs) × √(1 + (rise ÷ 12)²). Waste is added before shingle bundles are rounded up.

- 4Round to whole bundles, sheets or panels and calculate ridge/edge accessories separately.
Worked numerical example
A shed roof with 240 ft² of sloped surface using asphalt shingles needs 2.4 roofing squares. At three bundles per square, the theoretical requirement is 7.2 bundles, rounded to eight before any project-specific waste allowance.
Purchasing and rounding
Use usable coverage for the exact roofing product and panel/bundle size. Ridge caps, underlayment, drip edge and fasteners are separate takeoffs and should not be inferred from field-covering area alone.
Interpret the result
The result estimates the primary roof covering. Simple gable roofs usually have lower cut loss than roofs with valleys, hips or many penetrations; accessory quantities follow different linear or piece-based calculations.
