Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Volume = length × width × depth × allowance. Weight = volume × density. Bags = round up (weight ÷ bag weight).

How to use this estimate in a real project

Use this calculator to estimate sand volume, weight and delivery quantity for bedding, leveling or landscape applications from area, depth and bulk density. Material type and gradation must match the project specification.

Calculation steps

  2. 2Enter compacted layer depth.

  4. 4Apply allowance and bulk density for weight or delivery planning.

Worked numerical example

A 600 ft² area with a 2 in layer requires 3.70 yd³. With 10% allowance and density of 1.35 tons/yd³, the order is about 5.5 tons.

Purchasing and rounding

Sand may be sold by ton or cubic yard. Moisture changes weight, so use supplier density and legal truck payload.

Interpret the result

Volume controls layer coverage, while weight controls delivery and price when sold by ton. The two are linked through bulk density.
