Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Sloped area = plan area × pitch multiplier + extra roof area. Apply lap and waste allowances, divide by effective roll coverage and round up.

Use this calculator to estimate roof underlayment area and roll count. It supports measurement, purchasing and preliminary budgeting, but it does not select assemblies, products, code details or installation methods for the project.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Measure each project section separately and keep every input in one unit system.
  2. 2Enter the verified values for roof area, lap allowance and roll coverage.
  3. 3Review the raw measured result before applying waste, overlap, labor or price assumptions.
  4. 4Apply one documented allowance, then divide by the exact package yield or stock length and round up only at the purchasing stage.

Worked numerical example

A 2,400 ft² roof using rolls with 400 ft² of usable coverage needs six rolls theoretically; laps, valleys and waste can increase the purchase count.

Purchasing and rounding

Use roof surface area—not plan area unless already slope-adjusted—and the selected underlayment's stated usable coverage after side and end laps. Valleys, hips, penetrations and double-coverage zones should be added explicitly before rounding to whole rolls.

Interpret the result

The result is underlayment coverage and roll quantity for the entered roof area. A roll's printed gross area may not equal installed coverage because required laps reduce usable area; steep or complex roofs can also increase cut waste.
