This calculator estimates roof-sheathing sheets from sloped roof area, openings, sheet dimensions and cutting allowance. It supports ordering only; panel thickness, span rating and fastening must come from the roof design and product data.
Calculation steps
- 1Calculate actual sloped roof area, not only the building footprint.
- 2Subtract only large openings.
- 3Apply allowance for staggered joints, valleys and damaged sheets.
- 4Divide by sheet area and round upward.
Worked numerical example
A 1,920 ft² roof surface with 10% allowance requires 2,112 ft². Standard 4 ft × 8 ft sheets cover 32 ft², so the minimum order is 66 sheets before any per-plane layout adjustment.
Purchasing and rounding
Panels are bought as whole sheets. Complex roofs should be laid out by plane because offcuts from one plane may not fit another.
Interpret the result
The sheet count is a geometric takeoff. It does not establish whether OSB or plywood, panel thickness, edge clips or blocked joints are required.
