Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Base sand volume = masonry units ÷ 1,000 × entered sand rate. Handling allowance is added before converting to bulk units or bags.

How to use this estimate in a real project

Use this calculator to estimate masonry sand from mortar volume, selected mix proportions, bulk density and waste allowance. It helps order material but does not select mortar type or verify field batching.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Estimate required finished mortar volume.
  2. 2Apply the dry-material or yield factor used by the selected method.
  3. 3Apply the sand fraction from the entered mix.
  4. 4Add allowance and convert volume to weight with bulk density.

Worked numerical example

If a project requires 1 yd³ of finished mortar and the entered dry-volume factor and mix indicate 0.75 yd³ of sand, adding 10% allowance produces 0.825 yd³ before converting to tons or bags.

Purchasing and rounding

Bulk sand is sold by volume or weight and should be rounded to delivery increments. Moisture changes delivered weight and batching volume.

Interpret the result

The result is sensitive to the selected mortar yield and mix ratio. Site mixing should follow the specified mortar system rather than an improvised ratio.

Is sand use the same for brick and concrete block?+

No. Unit size, joint dimensions and mortar specification change the rate, so enter a rate appropriate to the project.

Why does wet sand weigh more?+

Moisture adds weight and changes bulk volume, so delivery weights can differ from a dry planning estimate.

Does this calculate cement or lime?+

No. It estimates sand only. Binder quantities must follow the specified mortar mix.
