Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Product weight = area ÷ rate-area basis × application rate × number of applications. Nutrient weight = product weight × nutrient percentage.

How to use this estimate in a real project

Use this calculator to estimate fertilizer product weight from treatment area, target nutrient rate and the nutrient percentage on the product label. It helps with quantity planning but does not prescribe a nutrient rate.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Measure the treatment area.
  2. 2Choose a target nutrient rate from a soil test or agronomic recommendation.
  3. 3Calculate total nutrient needed.
  4. 4Divide by the product nutrient fraction and round to package size.

Worked numerical example

To apply 1 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 ft² over 5,000 ft² requires 5 lb of nitrogen. With a 20% nitrogen product, divide by 0.20 to obtain 25 lb of fertilizer product.

Purchasing and rounding

Fertilizer is purchased in whole bags. Round upward only after calculating product weight, and store unused material according to the label.

Interpret the result

A low nutrient percentage requires more product weight for the same nutrient application. The result is product mass, not nutrient mass.

Is fertilizer rate based on product weight or nitrogen weight?+

Labels may state either. This calculator assumes the entered application rate is total product weight and separately reports nitrogen from the entered percentage.

Should a soil test be used?+

A soil test can identify nutrient needs and help avoid unnecessary application.

Why should fertilizer not be overapplied?+

Excess fertilizer can burn vegetation, waste money and contribute to nutrient runoff.
