Transparent calculation
BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.
Product weight = area ÷ rate-area basis × application rate × number of applications. Nutrient weight = product weight × nutrient percentage.

Use this calculator to estimate fertilizer product weight from treatment area, target nutrient rate and the nutrient percentage on the product label. It helps with quantity planning but does not prescribe a nutrient rate.
Calculation steps
- 1Measure the treatment area.
- 2Choose a target nutrient rate from a soil test or agronomic recommendation.
- 3Calculate total nutrient needed.
- 4Divide by the product nutrient fraction and round to package size.
Worked numerical example
To apply 1 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 ft² over 5,000 ft² requires 5 lb of nitrogen. With a 20% nitrogen product, divide by 0.20 to obtain 25 lb of fertilizer product.
Purchasing and rounding
Fertilizer is purchased in whole bags. Round upward only after calculating product weight, and store unused material according to the label.
Interpret the result
A low nutrient percentage requires more product weight for the same nutrient application. The result is product mass, not nutrient mass.
