Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Base area = ground area + perimeter-wall coverage + pier wrap area. Order area includes overlap/detailing allowance. Rolls are rounded up by roll coverage.

How to use this estimate in a real project

Last reviewed: July 30, 2026

Estimate crawl-space ground membrane and seam tape from floor area, wall turn-ups, pier wraps and required overlaps.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Measure ground area by section.
  2. 2Add perimeter turn-ups and pier wraps.
  3. 3Include seam overlap in net roll coverage.
  4. 4Round membrane and tape separately.

Worked numerical example

A 30 ft × 40 ft crawl space has 1,200 ft² of ground. A 12 in wall turn-up around 140 ft adds 140 ft²; with seams and 12% allowance, plan about 1,501 ft².

Purchasing and rounding

Choose membrane thickness, durability and sealing accessories for the actual crawl-space strategy.

Interpret the result

Area does not determine drainage, radon, termite, ventilation or dehumidification design.

Page-specific assumptions

  • Continuous ground coverage.
  • Turn-up dimensions are entered.
  • Net roll coverage includes overlaps.

Common mistakes

  • Ordering only footprint area.
  • Leaving seams unsealed.
  • Covering standing-water problems.

FAQ

Crawl Space Vapor Barrier Calculator questions

Should the barrier extend up foundation walls?+

Many systems include wall coverage, but the required height and termination method depend on the design and local requirements.

Why include pier wrap area?+

Support piers interrupt the floor membrane and may require vertical material and sealed transitions.

Does this calculate seam tape?+

No. Tape and sealant depend on sheet layout, seams, penetrations and perimeter detailing.
