Methodology
Transparent calculation
BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.
Solid stair volume = width × tread depth × riser height × n(n + 1) ÷ 2. Landing volume is added, then the allowance is applied and bags are rounded up.

Use this calculator to estimate concrete volume for a straight set of solid steps and landing from tread, rise, width and step count. It supports material ordering but does not design reinforcement, foundations or safe stair geometry.
Calculation steps
- 1Convert tread and rise dimensions to consistent units.
- 2Sum the increasing step layers across the stair width.
- 3Add any landing or support volume.
- 4Apply waste and convert to full bags or ready-mix volume.
Worked numerical example
For four steps 4 ft wide, with 11 in treads and 7 in rises, the stepped volume is found by summing each successive rectangular layer. Adding a 4 ft × 4 ft × 4 in landing and 10% waste produces the order volume.
Purchasing and rounding
Ready-mix is ordered by volume and bagged mix by whole bags. Small stepped forms often have higher handling loss than simple slabs.
Interpret the result
The volume grows faster than step count because lower portions support all higher treads. A landing can represent a large share of the total.

Are these steps assumed to be solid?+
Yes. Hollow, suspended or precast stair systems use different quantities and engineering.
