Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Volume per column = π × radius² × height. Total order = volume × column count × allowance. Bags = round up (order volume ÷ bag yield).

How to use this estimate in a real project

Use this calculator to estimate concrete volume and order quantity for round or rectangular columns from actual dimensions and count. It supports material planning only; column dimensions, reinforcement, cover and load capacity must come from the structural design.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Choose the correct round or rectangular column shape.
  2. 2Enter finished dimensions and column count.
  3. 3Calculate net geometric volume.
  4. 4Apply placement allowance and round to the supplier ordering increment.

Worked numerical example

Eight round columns measuring 16 in in diameter and 10 ft high contain about 111.7 ft³, or 4.14 yd³, before waste. With a 7% placement allowance, the order becomes about 4.43 yd³.

Purchasing and rounding

Ready-mix is normally ordered in supplier increments and should include realistic pump, chute and form-loss allowance. Bagged mixes must be rounded up to whole bags using the exact published yield.

Interpret the result

The result is concrete quantity, not structural adequacy. Tall narrow forms may require controlled placement lifts and consolidation planning.
