## Direct answer

Trace water from roof and grade to a safe outlet, then estimate conveyance, storage, trench and aggregate quantities without skipping hydraulic checks. Start with confirmed project dimensions and system requirements, then use each calculator only for the quantity it is designed to estimate.

## Primary calculator

- [Rainfall Runoff Calculator](https://buildmeter.net/rainfall-runoff-calculator/)

## Start with the complete project system

Residential drainage planning follows water from source to outlet. Estimate runoff, identify grading paths, size inlets and conveyance, then quantify trenches, bedding, stone, fabric and storage. A trench without a safe outlet is not a drainage solution.

## Worked example

A 2,400 ft² roof under a 2.5 in/hr design storm with a 0.95 coefficient produces about 59 gpm. If half the roof drains to one side, that branch begins near 30 gpm before accounting for additional paved areas. Pipe, inlet and overflow checks should use the branch flow, not the whole-site total indiscriminately.

## Build the takeoff in separate layers

### Residential Drainage Planning Guide planning layers

| Layer | Confirm | Primary output |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Source | Connected roof or paved area | Peak flow or storm volume |
| Conveyance | Pipe route, slope and fittings | Diameter and length |
| Subsurface work | Trench dimensions and bedding detail | Excavation, stone and fabric |
| Outlet | Daylight, basin, swale or approved system | Capacity and erosion protection |

## Measurement workflow

1. Sketch the project and divide irregular work into simple, labeled sections.
2. Record design-controlled values separately from field measurements.
3. Calculate net quantities before waste, laps or package rounding.
4. Apply a documented allowance to each material according to layout and handling risk.
5. Round to the unit actually sold and reconcile the surplus with the project plan.

## Purchasing and coordination

Order pipe, fittings, aggregate, geotextile and structures separately. Confirm actual pipe diameter, perforation pattern, bedding depth and aggregate type so a linear pipe estimate is not converted into a generic material package.

## Common mistakes

- Using rainfall depth where intensity is required.
- Routing water toward foundations or neighboring property.
- Ignoring elevation and backwater.
- Using decorative stone instead of specified drainage aggregate.

## How to interpret calculator results

Use drainage-pipe, trench and gravel calculators from the same route and elevations. Quantity checks cannot establish adequate slope, outlet capacity or legal discharge location.

This guide supports drainage takeoff and layout planning. Hydraulic capacity, grading, groundwater, property discharge rights and local stormwater requirements must be evaluated for the site.
